Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between kanji and formal numerals?
Formal numerals (daiji) such as 壱, 弐 and 参 are used on contracts and cheques because they are hard to alter. Plain numerals like 一, 二 and 三 are used in daily writing.
Why does Japanese count in units of 10,000?
Japanese groups digits by 万 (10,000), 億 (100 million) and 兆 (1 trillion). So 100,000 is 十万, which means “ten ten-thousands”.
Is 一 written before 十 and 百?
Usually not. 10 is 十 and 100 is 百, but 10,000 is 一万 and 1,000 is often written 千.
